French Polynesia: Airport firefighters and civil servants plan indefinite strike across territory from Jan. 14

Workers' strike to occur in French Polynesia from Jan. 14. Public service and domestic air travel disruptions likely. Protests possible.

Warning

Unionized airport firefighters under the Federation of Administration Agents of Polynesia (FRAAP) and public sector workers threatened to hold an indefinite strike across French Polynesia from Jan. 14. A similar action occurred in early December over several demands, including the revision to wage calculations. If unaverted, the work stoppage will likely disrupt civil services and domestic flights significantly, especially those offered by Air Moana (NM) and Air Tahiti (VT). Strike participants may also protest, mainly near government buildings in Papeete. Organizers may call off the strike at short notice if negotiations with government officials succeed.

Government offices and other public sector workplaces, including schools, will likely face strike-related closures. Domestic flight availability will probably be reduced until the strike action ends; connections between Tahiti and Bora Bora, Nukutepipi, Raiatea, and Rangiroa will likely remain operational. International flight schedules are unlikely to face significant disruptions at Tahiti's Fa'a'ā International Airport (PPT). Authorities typically increase security along march routes and at rally points. Localized transport disruptions and minor scuffles are possible.

Plan for public service and business disruptions. Confirm ground transport and flight arrangements. Do not check out of accommodation without confirming onward travel. Exercise caution near any demonstrations. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
