Germany: Adverse winter weather forecast across the southern half of the country through at least Jan. 3

Adverse winter weather forecast across the southern half of Germany through at least Jan. 3. Hazardous travel conditions likely.

Informational

Adverse winter weather is forecast across much of the southern half of Germany through at least Jan. 3. Light snowfall is expected across the region, with heavier accumulations likely in mountainous parts of the region. Snowfall accumulations of up to 25 cm (10 inches) are possible in elevated areas, with widespread totals of 1-5 cm (0.4-2 inches) expected at lower altitudes. Hazardous travel conditions are likely due to reduced visibility and slippery roads. Sporadic power outages are possible throughout the affected area.

As of Jan. 2, the German Meteorological Service (DWD) has issued the following weather warnings across the affected area:

  • Orange snowfall warnings (the second-lowest level on a four-tier scale): Parts of eastern, south-central, southeastern, southwestern, and western Baden-Wurttemberg, eastern, northeastern, and southern Bavaria, central and eastern Hesse, southern and southwestern Saxony, and southern Thuringia states.

  • Orange strong wind warnings: Parts of south-central, southwestern, and western Baden-Wurttemberg and eastern and southern Bavaria.

  • Yellow snowfall warnings: Across much of the rest of the affected area not under orange snowfall warnings.

  • Yellow strong wind warnings: Much of Baden-Wurttemberg and parts of central, southern, and western Bavaria states.

  • Yellow black ice warnings: Parts of central Bavaria State.

Officials could update and possibly extend the coverage of weather alerts over the coming days.

The winter weather will likely cause ground and air transport disruptions in the region over the coming days. Traffic and commercial trucking delays are possible along regional highways. Dangerous and challenging driving conditions are also likely on secondary and rural roads in the affected states as maintenance crews prioritize clearing major routes. Authorities could close stretches of highway if driving conditions become too hazardous. Gusty winds may threaten to topple high-profile vehicles throughout the affected area. Flight delays and cancellations are likely due to ground stops and deicing operations at regional airports.

Monitor local media for updated weather information. Verify road conditions before driving in areas where heavy snowfall is forecast. Allow extra time to reach destinations in these areas and carry an emergency kit and warm clothes if driving is necessary, especially on secondary or rural routes that could become impassable. Plan accordingly for delivery delays if routing shipments by truck through the affected area. Confirm flights. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
