Guinea: Activists may stage protests in Conakry Jan. 6
Opposition activists may demonstrate in Conakry, Guinea, Jan. 6. Increased security and localized disruptions likely.
Activists associated with the Living Forces of Guinea (Forces Vives de Guinee, FVG) could demonstrate in Conakry Jan. 6. The purpose of the protest is to denounce the transitional military government and call for the restoration public freedoms and return to a constitutional government, among other demands. While organizers have not announced any specific times or locations, they have called on participants to rally "in the streets and in public squares." It remains unclear how many people may participate; hundreds could join the actions.
Governmental authorities have previously banned demonstrations and threatened to initiate criminal proceedings against organizers if they fail to comply with the ban.
Authorities will probably deploy a heightened security presence near any protest sites. Localized business and transport disruptions are likely. Security forces may attempt to disperse participating activists forcefully; clashes between protesters and security forces are possible. Further gatherings are possible in the coming days.
Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent any protests that materialize. If violence breaks out, leave the vicinity immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Remain polite and nonconfrontational if stopped at a security checkpoint or questioned by police. Heed official directives.
