India: Further protests likely in Bihar State through at least mid-January over alleged civil service examination irregularities
Further protests likely in Bihar State, India, through at least mid-January over civil service examination. Localized disruptions possible.
Students and opposition parties will likely continue to protest in Bihar to denounce alleged irregularities over the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) examination. In recent weeks, related gatherings have occurred at the BPSC building and Gandhi Maidan in the state capital, Patna, with authorities using water cannons and mild force to disperse protesters. Protesters also held road and rail blockades in other locations across Bihar, including Arwal, Ara, Begusarai, Bettiah, Buxar, Darbhanga, Samastipur, Saran, and Siwan. Meanwhile, opposition Jan Suraaj Party leader Prashant Kishor announced an indefinite strike from Jan. 2.
Additional protests, including shutdown strikes and transport blockages, are likely across Bihar. Well-attended gatherings could draw hundreds of people. Potential gathering sites include government buildings, public squares, and major thoroughfares. In Patna, popular protest locations include the BPSC building, Gandhi Maidan, Gardanibagh area, and J.P. Golambar. During a shutdown strike, local businesses typically suspend their operations or are forced to close.
Authorities will likely deploy a heightened security presence near protest venues. Police may use force, including water cannons and tear gas, to disperse crowds if they are unruly or attempt to breach security cordons.
Plan accordingly for potential localized transport and business disruptions. Avoid any demonstration that materializes. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
