Libya: Heightened security likely, clashes possible through at least mid-January due to ongoing security operation in Az Zawiya

Heightened security likely, clashes possible near Az Zawiya and Tripolitania Region, Libya, through mid-January. Disruptions possible.

Warning

Heightened security and further clashes are likely in Az Zawiya and the surrounding Tripolitania Region through at least mid-January as the Libyan Defense Ministry of the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity (GNU) launched a large-scale security operation in the West Coast Military Zone on Jan. 4. Authorities stated the purpose of the operation is to fight drug trafficking, fuel smuggling, and illegal migration. Reports indicate that authorities have increased military patrols to secure areas along the Libyan-Tunisian border and launched airstrikes near Az Zawiya on Jan. 5-6. There have been no official reports on casualties. Authorities have reportedly issued warnings for Az Zawiya residents to stay away from "suspicious places" as they could be targeted in ongoing operations.

Additional security deployments, including military patrols, checkpoints, and possible movement restrictive measures, are likely in the West Coast Military Zone near Az-Zawiyah in the coming days, including along the Coastal Road (A1 Highway). Further airstrikes and clashes between security forces and armed militias cannot be ruled out. Localized unrest could also be sparked in response to any additional security operation. Any related gatherings are likely to be well-policed; clashes are possible. Any strike action could impact business and transport operations.

Maintain heightened vigilance if operating near Az Zawiya. If violence breaks out in your area, seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations. Reconfirm the status of road routes before departure.

The ongoing security operation follows intense clashes between armed militias in Az-Zawiyah, which led to the suspension of activities at Az Zawiya oil refinery in December 2024.
