Unionized law enforcement personnel staging protests across Romania as of the afternoon of Jan. 8. Localized disruptions likely.

Informational

Unionized law enforcement personnel are protesting in multiple cities across Romania as of Jan. 8. The purpose of the action is to denounce recent government measures canceling paid overtime for police officers. Law enforcement officers have also announced the start of overtime strikes nationwide. Three major demonstrations are ongoing as of Jan. 8, reporting several hundred attendees:

  • Bucharest: Participants are likely gathered near Calea Victoriei Street, near the General Directorate of Bucharest Police and the General Inspectorate of Romanian Police.

  • Cluj-Napoca: Participants are reportedly gathered at Bucium Street.

  • Constanta: Participants are reportedly gathered at Boulevard Mamaia, in the area of Constanta County Police Inspectorate.

Further demonstrations are likely ongoing in other major urban centers across Romania. Another round of demonstrations is planned for Jan. 10.

Localized road travel and transport disruptions are likely near the protest sites, and heightened security is likely near affected areas. Low-level confrontations between demonstrators and security forces may occur.

Avoid the protest areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the affected areas. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately leave the area at the first signs of confrontation.
