Muan International Airport (MWX) near Muan, South Jeolla Province, will remain closed through at least Jan. 14 following a commercial airline crash. Jeju Air (7C) flight 2216, carrying 181 people from Bangkok, Thailand, crashed at MWX at approximately 09:03 Dec. 29, killing at least 179 people. Emergency personnel rescued two crew members. The aircraft was attempting to land when it failed to deploy its landing gear and made a belly landing, veering off the runway and crashing into a concrete embankment. Officials have declared MWX a special disaster zone and are conducting investigations.
Localized ground transport disruptions are likely around MWX as investigations continue. Spillover flight disruptions are possible at nearby airports as officials divert aircraft previously scheduled to MWX to alternative sites. Lingering disruptions may occur after MWX's reopening as airlines adjust schedules and clear backlogs.
MWX is located approximately 40 km (25 miles) southwest of Gwangju.
Avoid the affected area until emergency response activities conclude and authorities give the all-clear. Reconfirm flights to all nearby airports through Jan. 14. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. If necessary, consider making alternative arrangements for time-sensitive travel.
