Spain: Aircraft on runway prompts disruptions at Tenerife South Airport as of evening Jan. 2

Authorities suspend flights at Tenerife South Airport in Spain as of evening Jan. 2 after airplane blocks runway. Diversions reported.

Warning

Authorities suspended services at Tenerife Airport South (TFS) on the evening of Jan. 2 after an aircraft blocked the runway after landing; it was not immediately clear what caused the plane to black the runway. No injuries were reported due to the incident. Inbound airplanes are reportedly bypassing TFS and landing at other airports, including Tenerife Airport North (TFN) and Gran Canaria Airport (LPA). Officials are working to tow the aircraft from the impacted runway; however, they did not estimate when services would resume.

The suspension will continue until authorities remove the aircraft from the TFS runway and give the all-clear. Disruptions will likely continue through at least early Jan. 3 as authorities seek to reposition misplaced flight stock. Disruptions caused by additional landings due to diversions are possible at TFN and LPA.

Reconfirm planned air travel via TFS. Allow additional time if traveling via TFN or LPA. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed.
