Turkiye: Activists to demonstrate in Istanbul Jan. 11-12
Activists to protest at Pendik and Eminonu districts, Istanbul, Turkiye, Jan. 11 and 12. Heightened security likely.
Activists from at least two political opposition parties plan to demonstrate in Istanbul's Pendik and Eminonu districts on Jan. 11 and 12 respectively. The purpose of the demonstrations is to denounce the potential for government talks aimed at regulating the conflict between the Turkish state and the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), with the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) acting as an intermediary. The following protests are planned:
Jan. 11: Activists affiliated with the Homeland Party (Memleket Partisi) will rally at Pendik Sahil Etkinlik Alani in Pendik District from 14:00. Organizers will also run an informational kiosk at the protest site 12:00-17:00.
Jan. 12: Activists affiliated with the Patriotic Party (Vatan Partisi) will assemble at Eminonu Square in Eminonu District from 14:00.
It remains unclear how many participants may attend the gatherings.
Law enforcement officers will almost certainly deploy nearby to monitor the gatherings. Localized traffic disruptions are likely near both events. Low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the affected areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the protest sites. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
