Yemen: Increased security likely following protests in Al-Shaykh Othman and Al-Mansoura districts in Aden Jan. 2

Heightened security likely following protests in Aden Jan. 2. Further demonstrations, clashes possible.

Warning

Increased security is likely in Aden's Al-Shaykh Othman and Al-Mansoura districts following protests on Jan. 2. The protests were to denounce repeated power outages in the districts, which the Electricity Corporation claims were due to a lack of fuel. Reports indicate that the demonstrations closed several streets, including the Aden-Taiz Express Highway (N1 Highway), resulting in transport disruptions. Additional protests and associated disruptions are likely until authorities respond to the protester's demands.

Should additional demonstrations materialize over the coming days, increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive or if they ignore police orders to disperse.

Avoid all protests due to the potential for clashes. Heed the advice of security personnel. Allow additional time if traveling through areas impacted by protests.
