Informational

Event

Authorities in Baoshan, Yunnan Province, have reported at least 10 injuries after a magnitude-5.3 earthquake struck about 26 km (16 miles) from Bonan at around 23:27 May 2. Local officials have activated a level three emergency response (on a four-tier scale) and rescue teams are present in the affected area. The earthquake has damaged property and transport infrastructure, as well as disrupted water, electricity, and telecommunication services in the epicenter. Reports indicate that the Dabao section of the Dali-Ruili Railway suspended its services temporarily, but resumed at around 02:50 on May 3. Authorities have evacuated around 11,000 residents in Banqiao, Shuizhai, and Wayao townships in Longyang District, Baoshan following the earthquake.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of about 18 km (11 miles), and light shaking was probably felt in parts of Yunnan Province, China, and Kachin State, Myanmar. Disruptions including road closures are likely in affected areas over the coming hours and days as response and recovery operations are carried out. Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.

Advice

Out of an abundance of caution, consider vacating multistory buildings where shaking occurred until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Monitor and plan for aftershocks.
