A magnitude-5.0 earthquake occurred in the coastal area of Arequipa Region at around 21:12 May 2. The epicenter was about 153 km (95 miles) west of Arequipa. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 62 km (39 miles), and light shaking was probably felt throughout Arequipa, Moquegua, southern Ayacucho, and southern Apurimac regions. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties due to the earthquake; significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are likely over the coming days.
