US to implement enhanced security measures for airlines beginning October 26, resulting in potentially longer wait times ahead of US-bound international flights; passengers may have to complete short security interviews

Informational

Event

More rigorous security screening for all passengers on US-bound international flights will go into effect on Thursday, October 26. Travelers may now face short security interviews at check-in or at the gate. The new security measures are expected to affect an estimated 325,000 passengers on 2000 daily commercial flights to the US. There are concerns that the new security rules will result in increased wait times at airports as staff and customers adjust to the new measures.

Context

On June 28, the US adopted stricter security screenings for laptops and other electronics in carry-on luggage, replacing a temporary restriction on carry-on electronic devices on flights from certain airports in the Middle East and North Africa.  Airlines were given 21 days to implement new security measures, and 120 days to implement more rigorous screening procedures, including short interviews, with the deadline for this latter requirement falling on October 26. Airports and airlines that fail to comply with the new security guidelines could face blanket bans on electronic devices on aircraft or see a temporary suspension of permission to provide flight service into the United States.

Advice

Travelers are advised to be prepared for increased wait times as the new security measures go into effect and to contact their airline for more information.
