Mexico: Heavy rainfall continues in Mexico City June 30

Event

Torrential rains continue to affect Mexico City and its surroundings causing severe flooding in the northern parts of the capital as of Friday, June 30. The worst hit areas include Miguel Hidalgo, Azcapotzalco, Cuauhtemoc, Indios Verdes, and Gustavo A. Madero, as well as a number of roadways such as Boulevard Paseo de la Reforma, the Circuito Interior (ring road), and Avenida Insurgentes. Local metro services, along with road traffic, had suffered major disruptions over the past few days due to the flooding; however, metro services are reportedly operating normally as of Friday. Some infrastructural damages as well as downed trees have been reported.

The metropolitan municipalities of Naucalpan and Ecatepec (Estado de México state) also suffered from flash floods after the Río de los Remedios burst its banks.

The Meteorological Institute forecasts heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds through Sunday, July 2, across Mexico City and Estado de México. The risk of flooding remains high.

Flooding and landslides are common following heavy rains, including within Mexico City. Be aware that the risk of contracting water- and mosquito-borne diseases tends to rise after periods of heavy rains.

Individuals present in Mexico City and other affected areasare advised to monitor the situation, to avoid areas directly hit by flooding, and to adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
