Morocco: Police clash with protesters in Al-Hoceima June 8 /update 4

Event

Police have reportedly fired tear gas at protesters during a protest in Al-Hoceima on June 8. The protesters allegedly threw stones at riot police in the Sidi Abed neighborhood of Al-Hoceima. At least two people were injured in the clashes, and security forces have carried out several arrests in the past five days.

Additional protests are likely in the coming days.

Context

This current wave of demonstrations began on May 18, when thousands of protesters took to the streets of Al-Hoceima. Around 90 people had been arrested during anti-government protests in the north.

Protests, which sometimes turn violent, are relatively common in Al-Hoceima, known to be a symbol of anti-colonial resistance, which is suffering from poor economic conditions. In October 2016, violent protests broke out after a fishmonger was killed while trying to prevent his wares from being confiscated by police.
