Authorities warn of high forest fire risk in several parts of the country June 1

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) issued warnings due to the high risk of wild fires on Thursday, June 1.

There is a “high” risk in parts of the regions of Bragança (Torre de Moncorvo, Freixo de Espada a Cinta, Alfandega da Fé), Viseu (Tabuaço), Coimbra (Pampilhosa da Serra), Castelo Branco (Vila Velha de Rodao, Proença-a-nova), Portalegre (Nisa, Gaviao), Santarem (Maçao), and Faro (Alcoutim, Castro Marim, Tavira, Sao Bras De Alportel, Loulé).

There is an “elevated” risk in parts of the regions of Beja (Odemira, Almodovar, Mertola), Faro (Monchique, Silves), Portalegre (Marvão, Castelo de Vide, Pointe de Sor), Santarém (Chamusca, Abrantes, Constancia, Sardoal), Castelo Branco (Vila de Rei, Serta, Oleiros, Castelo Branco, Idanha-A-Nova, Fundão, Penamacor, Covilhã), Guarda (Guarda, Sabugal, Pinhel, Celorico da Beira, Fornos de Algodres, Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, Trancoso, Meda, Vila Nova de Foz Coa), Coimbra (Arganil), Viseu (Sernancelhe, Moimenta da Beira, Vila Nova de Paiva, Penedono, Sao Joao da Pesqueira), Vila Real (Sabrosa, Alijo, Murça), and Bragança (Bragança, Carrazeda de Ansiases, Vila Flor, Mirandela, Macedo de Cavaleiros, Mogadouro, Vimioso).

There is a “moderate” risk in various other areas of the east and southwest.

Context

The increased wild fire risk is due to warm weather conditions and strong winds.
