166 killed and 104 missing following floods and landslides caused by southwest monsoon torrential rains; more rain forecast
Event
The tropical depression affecting Sri Lanka since May 24 has evolved into Cyclone Mora as of Monday, May 29. The death toll from devastating floods and landslides over the past week has risen to 166, with 104 more people reported missing. According to the Disaster Management Center, over 400,000 people were affected by the torrential rains and strong winds, with 100,000 people relocated. The southern cities of Galle, Matara, Kalutara, and Ratnapura, all located in Sabaragamuwa province, have been among the worst affected areas so far.
Strong winds, nearing 80 km/h (50 mph), are expected across the country, especially in coastal areas, through Tuesday, May 30. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast for the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, North Western and Central provinces, with precipitation reaching 10 cm (4 in) in some places through Wednesday, May 31.
Context
The southwest monsoon typically affects Sri Lanka in May and June. The Department of Meteorology issued a warning on May 27, stating that the southwest monsoon had established itself over the country, and warning naval and fishing communities to be vigilant.
Advice
Individuals present in affected regions are advised to follow instructions issued by local authorities, particularly evacuation orders, and to keep abreast of weather forecasts. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
