Uruguay: Orange alerts for storms May 19

Event

The Uruguayan meteorological authorities (INUMET) have issued orange alerts - signifying “significant risks” - for the majority of the country, including the capital region, due to torrential rains, thunderstorms, and possible hail forecast for Friday, May 19. Up to 8 cm (3 in) of rain is expected in diverse areas. Flooding is possible, particularly along rivers and coastlines. Downed trees, power outages, and related transportation disruptions are also possible.

The alerts are in effect for the following departments: Paysandú, Río Negro, Soriano, Colonia, Durazno, Flores, San José, Florida, Canelones, Montevideo, Cerro Largo, Treinta y Tres, Lavalleja, Maldonado, and Rocha. Lower yellow alerts are in place in the country’s four remaining departments, Artigas, Salto, Rivera, and Tacuarembó, all located in the north.

Floods are not rare in Uruguay and can occur year round.

Individuals in affected areas are advised to maintain a safe distance from river banks, to keep abreast of the situation via local media outlets, and to adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. possible evacuation orders).
