Argentina: Extended subway hours in Buenos Aires beginning July 1

Subway hours (Monday through Saturday) extended in Buenos Aires beginning July 1; Sundays and holidays maintain same schedule

Informational

Event

The Buenos Aires metro will expand its hours of operation beginning July 1 after almost 400,000 people voted to approve a proposal by the Ministry of Urban Development and Subterráneos de Buenos Aires (SBASE). The metro will run from 05:30 to 23:30 (local time) from Monday to Friday and from 06:00 to 24:00 on Saturdays (times vary slightly depending on the line). The metro will maintain its current schedule on Sundays and holidays, operating from 08:00 to 10:30.

Context

Citizens in Buenos Aires have long been dissatisfied with the metro's operating hours,. The Buenos Aires legislator Maximiliano Ferraro, from the Civic Coalition ARI (CC-ARI) political party, has been proposing a similar initiative since 2012. His plan called for the metro to operate even longer hours, but the local government determined that such a plan would be too costly.
