Events are taking place across Latvia to celebrate the country’s Independence Day on Thursday, May 4. Localized disruptions are possible in major cities throughout the day. In the capital Riga, disruptions can be expected around the Freedom Monument, the Riga Cathedral, and Dome Square, as well as around cultural centers in the Ziemelblazma, Imanta, and Ilguciems neighborhoods.

Additionally, a military parade is set to take place in the city of Liepaja.

Events are expected to remain peaceful but a heightened security presence is to be anticipated.

May 4 marks Latvia’s independence from the Soviet Union, when the country reinstated its 1922 constitution in 1990.
