Uruguay: General strike July 20

Event

The PIT-CNT union has called for a 24-hour general strike to take place on Thursday, July 20, to protest the proposed 2018 federal budget. Workers from various industries will take part. According to the union, the vast majority of sectors of the economy will be impacted, with only public health and security services maintained throughout the day. Public transportation is expected to be significantly disrupted, with only about half of normal services in operation; taxis and long-distance buses will also be affected.

Striking workers are expected to hold demonstrations throughout the country, with the largest gatherings to be anticipated in the capital Montevideo. Associated traffic disruptions are possible. Protests will likely remain peaceful, but low-intensity violence cannot be ruled out.

Context

The union is calling for increased salaries, better working conditions and collective negotiation rights, increased public spending, and a better educational system, among other demands. This is the first 24-hour general strike held in the country since July 2016.
