India: Significant flooding in Gujarat and Rajasthan states as of July 25

Heavy rains over the past three days have caused significant flooding in the western states of Gujarat and Rajasthan. In Gujarat state, the districts of Banaskantha, Rajkot, Surendranagar, Ahmedabad, and Morbi were the most affected. Rescuers had to use boats to evacuate almost 790 people in the state. Officials in Rajasthan state reported on Tuesday, July 25, that more than 24,000 villagers had been evacuated to higher ground, while at least ten people were killed between July 24 and 25 in the state. On Monday, July 24, some areas of the state received 90 cm (32 in) of rain. Media sources have reported that roads and rail systems have been damaged by the flooding. Significant transportation disruptions should be anticipated in the region.

Context

The monsoon season in the west and southwest lasts from June to September. Torrential rains during this period can, among other things, disrupt transportation and cause significant flooding. According to media reports, 70 people have died in Gujarat due to flooding during this year’s monsoon season.

Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
