Local dispute leads to violence in Avenor area of Accra on August 2; increased security presence in area

Warning

Event

A violent dispute erupted in the Avenor neighborhood of Accra on Wednesday, August 2, leading to several injuries and the destruction of multiple properties. Reports say the dispute began over disputed ownership of a parcel of land in the area and involved multiple individuals on either side. The situation reportedly normalized by the morning of Thursday, August 3; however, police are expected to maintain a heightened security presence in the area in the coming days. Further clashes are possible; if they do occur, localized transportation disruptions are likely.

Context

Property-related violence has occurred in the past. In 2016, a gunman attacked residents after a court permitted building on a different disputed parcel of land.

Advice

Individuals should exercise caution and avoid the area affected by the unrest.  On a more general note, individuals present in the country are advised to be particularly prudent in Ghana’s northeastern regions, where there are periodic outbreaks of violence and occasional curfews.
