Sweden: Police tighten security in Stockholm August 8
Demonstrators protesting deportations to Afghanistan attacked by extremist right-wing network August 8; police increase security measures
Event
Protestors opposing the forced deportation of asylum seekers to Afghanistan were attacked at approximately 20:00 (local time) on Tuesday, August 8, in Stockholm’s Mynttorget Square. The attackers - reportedly members of the right-wing extremist network Nordisk Ungdom (Nordic Youth) - threw a lit flare at the demonstrators while yelling insults. Three people were reportedly injured.
The police have announced that security measures in the capital have been increased as a consequence.
Context
Similarly, in early May, hundreds of people staging a pro-refugee protest at Mynttorget Square were attacked by Nordic Youth members. The organization was also responsible for violently interrupting the Stockholm Pride Parade on July 30.
