Mexico: Popocatepetl volcano spewing ash August 30

Yellow alert issued for Popocatepetl volcano after two eruptions and several plumes of ash reported on August 30

Warning

Event

The National Coordinator of Civil Protection has issued a yellow alert over an increase in volcanic activity at the Popocatepetl volcano. At least two eruptions and several plumes of smoke were observed coming from the volcano between August 29 and August 30, while an increase in seismic activity has been recorded.

Residents in nearby towns have been encouraged to remain in their homes and protect themselves against potential toxic fumes and volcanic ash.

Context

Mexico is home to several active volcanoes. In September 2016 eruptions from the Colima volcano caused evacuations in Colima and Jalisco areas. Popocatepetl is considered a relatively active volcano; in April 2016, the volcano erupted 40 times in 24 hours.

Yellow alerts - indicating increased volcanic activity - are the second highest alert level for volcanic activity after red (which indicates an imminent eruption).

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to keep abreast of the situation, to follow any instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. potential evacuation orders), and to take the certain precautions, such as stocking up on drinking water, wearing respiratory masks, and wearing covering clothing to protect skin from abrasive ash.
