India: Violent clashes during protest in Bihar state Sep. 5
Protesters and police officers clash during demonstrations in Patna, Bihar state, on September 5; at least 20 people wounded
Event
Violent clashes broke out during a demonstration in Bihar state on Tuesday, September 5. The fighting started on Ghurdaur Road in Patna after a group of protesters blocked government officials from demolishing illegal buildings in the area. Angry residents reportedly threw stones at the officials and the police officers accompanying them. They also burned a police car and three construction vehicles. According to media reports, police officers fired a number of live rounds into the air in an attempt to disperse the protesters. At least 20 people were wounded in the clashes, including eight officers, before the crowd forced the officials to leave the area. Further demonstrations may occur in the coming days and additional violence cannot be ruled out.
Context
The crowds were protesting against an anti-encroachment ruling issued by the district administration in the Rajeev Nagar area of Patna. Ownership of the land has been disputed between the Bihar State Housing Board (BSHB) and local residents. BSHB acquired the land in 1974 to establish a regulated housing zone. In 2010, the Bihar government passed a law that established a fixed amount of land that could be used for housing. However, farmers who worked the land claim that they never sold it to the government.
Advice
Individuals in Bihar state are advised to avoid all protests, keep abreast of the situation, and adhere to instructions issued by the local authorities.
