Tear gas attack at Frankfurt International Airport September 11; at least six injured

According to media reports, at least six people have been injured in a tear gas attack in Frankfurt International Airport (FRA)’s Terminal 1 at around 11:40 (local time) on Monday, September 11. A fire operation was subsequently launched, resulting in 20 check-in counters to be closed. No arrests have reportedly been made, nor has any harmful substance been found.

Flights operations appear to have resumed, and check-in has been reopened. Some residual disruptions may still occur. The incident is not being treated as a terrorist attack. Further details are yet to come.

Context

Germany continues to be on high terrorism alert since a truck deliberateroy drove into a Christmas market in Berlin on December 19, 2016. The suspect was allegedly encouraged by the Islamic State (IS).

Terrorism has become a chief public concern throughout Europe due to the various attacks in recent years. On August 17, two cars deliberately crashed into pedestrians in Barcelona and Cambrils (Spain), killing 14 people and injuring over 100. This major attack followed incidents over the past few years in Paris, Istanbul, Madrid, and London.
