Italy: Flooding kills seven in Livorno Sep. 10

Event

At least seven people were killed after heavy rainstorms caused significant flooding and landslides in the city of Livorno (Tuscany) on Sunday, September 10. The city is reporting extensive damage and flood precautions are being taken in Rome as further heavy rains are expected in the coming days.

The death toll in Livorno could rise as rescue operations continue and the floodwaters recede.

Context

An orange flood warning was issued ahead of a major rain storm on Friday, September 8, however the mayor of Livorno has accused the Italian government of underestimating the danger of the storm.

Individuals present in Livorno and other areas affected by the severe rains are advised to keep abreast of weather alerts, confirm travel reservations, avoid coastal and mountainous areas (risk of flooding and landslides), and adhere to all advice issued by the local authorities.

Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult. Because floodwater may also contain wastewater or chemical products, wear boots and try to avoid any contact with the water. All items having come into contact with the water should be washed and disinfected. Dispose of any food that may have come into contact with floodwater.
