Europe: Major Ryanair flight disruptions through October 28 /update 1
Some 2000 Ryanair flights to be canceled through end of October (40-50 per day); pilots threaten industrial action
Event
The Irish airline Ryanair has announced that it will be canceling some 2000 flights through to October 28 at least, due to a shortage of pilots on standby in the upcoming six weeks. As such, between 40 and 50 flights will be canceled per day, directly affecting some 400,000 passengers. Ryanair claims this decision will allow the airline to “improve its punctuality.”
Flights to and from Brussels-South Charleroi Airport (BSCA), Milan-Orio al Serio (BGY), Rome-Ciampino (CIA), Barcelona-El Prat (BCN), and London-Stansted (STN) international airports will be particularly affected. All canceled flights are listed on Ryanair’s website. Last-minute cancelations are also possible.
Moreover, on September 18, some 120 Ryanair pilots gathered in Dublin to discuss possible upcoming strikes to protest crowded flights schedules and poor working conditions. If such an industrial action goes ahead, further flight disruptions are to be expected.
Advice
Passengers traveling with Ryanair are advised to confirm the status of their flights prior to departure to the airport and to contact the airline for more information.
