Deadly storm hits Romania killing eight people September 17; storm-like conditions forecasted September 18

Warning

Event

A powerful storm unexpectedly struck western Romania on Sunday, September 17, killing eight people and injuring 67. Fierce winds up to 100 km/h (60 mph) as well as heavy rainfall battered the area around the city of Timisoara, uprooting trees and tearing off roofs. Power outages and water cuts were reported.

As of Monday, September 18, Romania's national weather agency continued to issue weather alerts warning of further wind and torrential rain in western areas. Associated transport disruptions, as well as isolated flooding, may occur.

Advice

Individuals in affected areas are advised to follow local weather forecasts, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, and confirm travel reservations. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
