Police report that at least 60 people were arrested in Gothenburg following clashes between members of the Nordic Resistance Movement (NMR), anti-fascist demonstrators, and police on Saturday, September 30. The clashes occurred during a planned protest march held by the NMR, a far-right neo-Nazi organization. At least one police officer was injured during the clashes.

Police officials also reported that prior to the march on Saturday, at least two foreign nationals were arrested after knives were found in their baggage; they are accused of planning attacks on Swedish police. Seven other foreign nationals were reportedly taken into custody on suspicion of planning violent acts.

Context

The NMR, which is not illegal in Sweden, gathered hundreds of people for the march on Saturday. Police had anticipated potential violence at Saturday's event, bringing in extra security forces to maintain order and adding 350 temporary jail spaces.
