South Korea: Holiday week celebrated October 2-9
South Korea celebrates multiple holidays October 2-9; transportation disruptions possible
Event
South Korea celebrated National Foundation Day on Tuesday, October 3, marking the traditional 2333 BC founding of Korea. Following National Foundation Day, the country will celebrate Chuseok, known also as “Korean Thanksgiving,” from Wednesday, October 4, to Friday, October 6. On Monday, October 9, South Korea will observe Hangul Day, in celebration of the invention of the modern Korean writing system in the year 1446.
Government offices as well as many private businesses will be closed during the week-long holiday. High demand for transportation is expected as millions of Koreans return home for the holidays, particularly for train and air travel. Up to 2 million people are expected to fly through Seoul Incheon International Airport (ICN) in the coming days.
Context
Parliament established a one-off holiday on Monday, October 2, to “bridge” the weekend with standard holidays starting on Tuesday. Officials justified the day as a means to “help South Koreans rest” after a tumultuous political year.
Advice
Individuals should anticipate less availability and higher prices for transportation during the holiday period. Furthermore, individuals should anticipate the closure of many businesses and government offices through October 9 and anticipate associated disruptions.
