Germany: Hurricane-force winds to hit Berlin and Hamburg Oct. 5

Weather warnings issued in northern and eastern Germany as hurricane-force winds hit October 5

Warning

Event

Heavy rainfall and gusts of wind rising to hurricane-force strength are expected to hit the north and east of the country on the morning of Thursday, October 5. The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued a level 3 weather warning - the second highest - for various areas.

Major cities such as Bremen, Hamburg, and Berlin are forecast to be affected. As a result, localized flooding as well as transportation disruptions, including traffic congestion and bus and rail disruptions, may occur. As of 10:00 (local time), no flight disruptions had been reported at Hamburg (HAM), Berlin-Tegel (TXL), Berlin-Schönefeld (SXF), or Bremen (BRE) airports.

Advice

Travelers are advised to confirm reservations and to allow for extra time to reach their destinations. In the event of flooding, keep in mind that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
