Orange storm alerts issued for five northern departments on September 27; heavy rain, violent winds, and hail forecast

The Uruguayan meteorological institute INUMET has issued “orange” alerts - the second highest level - for five northern departments due to storms forecast to hit the region on Wednesday, September 27. The alerts are currently in place for the departments of Artigas, Salto, Tacuarembó, Rivera, and Cerro Largo. Up to 6 cm (2.5 in) of rain is expected to fall in certain areas within a short period and could result in flooding, particularly near rivers and in coastal areas. Violent thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds are also forecast. Associated power outages and transportation disruptions cannot be ruled out.
Lower yellow alerts are also in place in Paysandú, Durazno, Treinta y Tres, and Rocha departments.
