South Korea: Korean Air pilots threaten to strike Oct. 1-7

Pilots at the South Korean airline Korean Air (KAL) have threatened to go on a weeklong strike coinciding with the long Chuseok holiday break, which spans from Sunday, October 1, through Saturday, October 7. The pilot union warned that 390 pilots would refuse to work during this period, which would disrupt flight schedules significantly. However, according to KAL’s own policy, at least 80 percent of flights on international routes should be maintained, 70 percent on the Jeju Island route, and 50 percent on all other routes.

Context

Unionized pilots are demanding wage increases. A weeklong strike was avoided in March, after KAL’s CEO made a personal plea to the union. However, pilots and management have since failed to reach an agreement.
