Storm Herwert kills five across Central Europe on October 29; widespread transportation delays and power outages across the region

Warning

Event

At least five people were killed by storms across Central Europe on Sunday, October 29 following the passage of Storm Herwert. Authorities in the Czech Republic and Poland reported that two people were killed in each country by falling branches, while flash-flooding killed one in Lower Saxony in Germany. The storm brought gusts of wind reaching up to 180 km/h (112 mph). Rail service was disrupted in northern Germany due to the danger of fallen branches on the tracks. Duetsche Bahn reported that several main rail routes, including the Hamburg-Berlin, Berlin-Frankfurt and Hannover-Dortmund lines will likely remain closed through Monday, October 29. Widespread power outages were also reported across Austria, Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic.

Advice

Individuals in Central Europe should expect transportation disruptions in flooded areas, keep abreast of the situation via reliable weather reporting outlets, and adhere to instructions issued by the local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
