Guinea: Demonstration scheduled November 4

Event

On Sunday, October 29, the opposition party Union of Republican Forces (UFR) called for demonstrations to be held in Conakry on Saturday, November 4 to celebrate the 17th anniversary of UFR leader Sidya Touré's entry into politics. Authorities expect supporters to gather at 10:00 (local time) at the Esplanade du Palais du Peuple in Conakry. Heightened security and transportation disruptions are expected in the vicinity of the demonstration.

Context

Political protests take place on a regular basis throughout Guinea, but the frequency and intensity of demonstrations have increased in recent months amid an ongoing electoral crisis. More generally, civil society protest groups, mainly organized by the political opposition, regularly denounce what they claim is a failure of governance by President Alpha Condé and his party, blaming them for the country's poor economic performance, as well as corruption, the high cost of living, public health issues, and insecurity.
