Guatemala: Movistar closes stores through November 13

On Saturday, November 11, the telecommunications company Telefónica announced that its Movistar stores and customer service offices in Guatemala would be closed through Monday, November 13, following a series of attacks on its employees. Movistar customer support is available exclusively through the company's call center or WhatsApp until shops and offices reopen on Tuesday, November 14. 

Context

Telefónica announced the temporary closures after four Movistar employees were killed on Friday, November 10, in a series of coordinated attacks. Police officials stated that the attacks may have been attempts by gang members to intimidate the company. Movistar is allegedly being extorted by gang members who are demanding around USD 13,600.

Movistar serves around 4 million customers in Guatemala.
