Kenya: Sporadic violence during opposition protests Nov. 20 /update 2

Isolated incidents of violence reported between protesting opposition supporters and police in Nairobi and Kisumu on November 20

Warning

Event

Supporters of the National Super Alliance (NASA) opposition coalition protested in some areas of Nairobi, Kisumu, and Migori on Monday, November 20, after Kenya's Supreme Court dismissed two cases challenging the October 26 presidential re-run vote. The ruling upheld the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta, whose inauguration has been set for Tuesday, November 28. Local media sources reported that at least three people have been killed in Monday’s violence, two in the Kibera area of Nairobi and one Migori. Isolated clashes between demonstrators and security forces took place in the Dandora Phase 4 neighborhood of Nairobi; unrest was also reported in the Central Business District and the Kondele area of Kisumu. A heightened security presence is expected throughout the country and additional violent clashes between demonstrators and security personnel cannot be ruled out.

Context

President Kenyatta won the August 8 presidential elections with 54 percent of the vote; however, on September 1, the Supreme Court officially invalidated the vote due to "irregularities." A re-run election held on October 26 was boycotted by opposition leader Raila Odinga. President Kenyatta won re-election with 98 percent of the vote, but with only 39 percent voter turnout.

Advice

Individuals in Kenya are advised to avoid all public gatherings (particularly political events) due to the risk of violence, to monitor the situation, and to shelter in place in the event of a deterioration in the local security situation (widespread violent protests, etc.). Additionally, those undertaking long-distance travel within the country in the coming days are advised to consider traveling via plane (rather than by road) to minimize exposure to security threats.
