Colombia: Major anti-crime operation in Medellín Nov. 23

A police operation to crackdown on extortion in Medellín (Antioquia department) - codenamed Artemisa - was launched in the early morning hours of Thursday, November 23. The operation has resulted in more than 120 arrests. Firearms, illegal drugs, and cash were also seized during the at least 117 raids carried out in the downtown area and neighborhoods of Castilla, Belén, and Manrique. Further raids are possible on Friday and in the coming days. 

Context

Extortion is one of the main sources of income for crime groups operating in the city and often leads to homicides and forced displacements. According to the local government, Artemisa has been the largest anti-crime operation ever executed in the city.
