Peru: Heavy rain forecast through November 30

The Peruvian weather agency Senamhi is warning that ongoing heavy rain is forecast to continue through Thursday, November 30, across much of the country. The most intense rainfall is expected on Monday and Tuesday. Snow and hail is also forecast for high-elevation areas, above 4200 m (13,800 ft) and 3000 m (9800 ft) respectively. Consequently, flooding, landslides, and associated disruptions are possible in the coming days.

Context

Torrential rains with the potential to cause deadly floods and landslides are common during the rainy season, which typically lasts from November through April in most of Peru (from January to May in the Cusco region). The 2016-2017 rainy season was particularly devastating; flooding and landslides caused major infrastructural damage and more than 100 fatalities, and triggered a dengue fever epidemic.
