South Africa: Increase in kidnappings of foreign nationals

Police authorities warn of rise in targeted kidnappings of foreign nationals; Pretoria businessman released on December 18 after being held for four months

Warning

Event

Police authorities are warning that has been an increase in the number of kidnappings of wealthy business people for ransom across South Africa. Security officials believe that organized criminal groups may be intentionally targeting foreign nationals and businessmen living in South Africa. The announcement came after a Pretoria area businessman was released on Monday, December 18, after being abducted by unknown assailants on August 3. It is unclear if a ransom was paid for the businessman's release.

Context

Police have been monitoring a rise in the kidnappings of prominent businessmen in recent months. In September, a Cape Town-based businessman was rescued by security forces after being kidnapped earlier that month. A Chinese businessman was also released in September after a ransom was paid. In 2016, at least two foreign businessmen were kidnapped and held for ransom.

South Africa suffers from extremely high crime rates and continues to be one of the most violent countries in the world. Official statistics cite the national murder rate at over 50 homicides per day. Cities and townships (shantytowns) are particularly affected by violence.

Advice

Individuals present in South Africa are advised to remain vigilant, to vary daily routines, and to refrain from sharing personal information with unknown persons to reduce the risk of being targeted by potential kidnappers. If attacked, remain calm, do not offer any resistance, and obey all demands issued by your assailant(s). Do everything in your power to keep the situation as calm as possible (accept offered food, engage in conversation initiated by your captors, avoid all political or potentially inflammatory topics, do not do anything that would alarm your captors, etc.).
