Extreme cold prompts flight delays and cancelations in Chicago-area airports December 28; additional flight disruptions possible in the coming days amid continued cold temperatures

Extremely cold temperatures prompted numerous flight delays and cancelations at Chicago-area airports on Thursday, December 28. As of late on Thursday (local time), 84 flights had been canceled at Chicago's Midway Airport (MDW) throughout the day; flights from MDW were delayed an average of 16 minutes on Thursday. Some 28 cancelations were reported at Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) as of late on Thursday, and flights were delayed an average of 20 minutes. Cold temperatures are expected to persist in Chicago in the coming days; additional flight delays and cancelations are also possible in the coming days.
