Pakistan: Influenza leaves at least 15 dead in Multan January 5

An influenza outbreak in Multan (Punjab province) has left at least 15 people dead as of Friday, January 5. The immune systems of the deceased influenza patients were reportedly compromised from battling additional diseases.

According to the Punjab Health Department, eight other suspected infected individuals in the area have been hospitalized on Friday. Local health authorities have launched an influenza vaccination campaign to impede the spread of the outbreak, and a group of specialist doctors has been deployed to the area to treat existing cases. Chief Minister of Punjab Shehbaz Sharif has also ordered relevant authorities to organize an awareness campaign to disseminate epidemiological information about influenza. Despite these efforts, a rise in influenza cases is expected in Multan and adjacent areas in Punjab province in the coming weeks.

Influenza is a contagious virus that can spread from human to human. Symptoms include high fever, aching muscles, headache, and respiratory issues. Particularly vulnerable individuals include young children, the elderly, pregnant women, the obese, and individuals suffering from chronic diseases. An annual vaccine is available.
