Mexico: Medical strike in Oaxaca state

Medical workers in Oaxaca state blockaded the entrance to Aurelio Valdivieso General Hospital in Oaxaca city on Tuesday, January 23, as they continued their indefinite strike calling for back pay and an end to layoffs. The strike has led to the partial closure of at least 14 hospitals and 230 clinics throughout the state. Governor Alejandro Murat Hinojosa announced that owed salaries and bonuses would be paid within the coming days; however, as of Thursday, January 25, it is unclear when the strike will end.

Context

Medical personnel began striking during the week of January 15 after not receiving year-end bonuses as well as January pay. Furthermore, the doctors and nurses demanded that the state government reverse its decision to lay off 8000 "improperly hired" personnel. The state government considers the move essential to prevent bankruptcy and create a financially sustainable health sector.
