Tremors from a 6.1-magnitude earthquake in Jurm, Afghanistan, were felts in several regions in Pakistan on Wednesday, January 31. According to local media, tremors were felt in Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar, Lasbela, Sargodha, and Gjuranwala. At least one person was killed and nine others injured by a collapsed building in Lasbela, Balochistan province, as a result of the quake. Mobile phone service was also temporarily disrupted in Islamabad and Peshawar. Additional earthquakes and aftershocks are possible.

Context

The earthquake hit Afghanistan at approximately 11:37 (local time) and was felt across the country, including in the capital city of Kabul, as well as in neighboring Pakistan and as far away as northern India. No casualties have been reported in Afghanistan.

Advice

Individuals present in the impacted region are advised to monitor the situation, to be prepared for aftershocks, and to heed to any instructions issued by local authorities.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), to move away from windows, and to not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
