Colombia: Alleged terrorist plot in Bogotá thwarted
Authorities reportedly arrest suspect planning to carry out terrorist attack in area of Bogotá frequented by US Embassy personnel
Event
Authorities reportedly arrested a Cuban national, present in Colombia illegally, who was allegedly planning to attack Bogotá’s “Zona Rosa,” a densely populated area frequented by American tourists and US Embassy staff. Gutierrez was arrested on Monday, March 12, on terrorist charges and accused of conspiring to commit a crime. Authorities had intercepted messages between Gutierrez and a group of Islamic extremists that described his plan. It is not yet known whether Gutierrez is part of an international terrorist network such as Islamic State (IS) or merely a sympathizer, but authorities have found no indication of any accomplices in Colombia. Officials assured the public that the National Police coordinates with agencies around the world to anticipate such attacks, but have found no greater evidence of Islamist extremism in Colombia.
Advice
Individuals in Bogotá are advised to remain vigilant, to avoid all areas where investigations or security operations are ongoing, to adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities, and to report any suspicious objects or behavior to relevant authorities.
