Event
The Chemical, Energy, Paper, Printing, Wood and Allied Workers Union (CEPPWAWU) is planning to hold a demonstration in the Sandton area of Johannesburg on Monday, March 19. Union members are expected to gather at the George Lea Park at 11:00 (local time) before marching to the Sasol Head Office along Sandton Drive. The city of Johannesburg has authorized the union to demonstrate until 14:00 and given permits for 1000 people to participate in the march. Localized traffic disruptions are anticipated in the area.
Advice
Individuals present in Johannesburg are advised to avoid all demonstrations as violence can break out with little to no warning.
More generally, individuals are advised - particularly in urban areas such as Johannesburg - to be on guard against high levels of criminal activity and to maintain a low profile at all times. Be aware that criminals may target travelers arriving at airports, when they are particularly vulnerable (disoriented, carrying valuables, etc.); prepare your transfer from the airport ahead of time and be alert. Generally speaking, be particularly vigilant after dusk and avoid traveling by foot after nightfall. Criminals may be armed; do not resist if confronted and do not look your attacker(s) directly in the eye. Drive with windows closed, doors locked, and all personal possessions hidden from sight.
