Uruguay: Education unions to strike March 22

Various education unions plan to strike nationwide March 22; demonstrations planned

A number of education unions are planning to hold a nationwide strike on Thursday, March 22. The Uruguayan Teacher Training Federation (FUM) will hold a 24-hour strike. A partial strike from 09:00-14:00 (local time) organized by the PIT CNT union will be held the same day. Protesters are also planning to gather at the University of the Republic in Montevideo at 10:00 before marching to Plaza Libertad. Localized traffic disruptions around protests are expected.

Context

Teachers are demanding a new collective bargaining agreement from the government. FUM is asking for additional education investment from the government, namely a minimum of 6 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
