Officials report that nearly 8 million people are in need of emergency food and water aid throughout the country

According to Ethiopian officials, nearly 8 million people are in need of emergency food and water throughout the country. The country has been negatively affected by three years of drought as well as the ongoing conflict in the border areas of the Oromia and Somali regions. Among those hardest hit are the 2.4 million pastoralists who have lost 80 percent of their livestock. Officials estimate that in 2018, over 3.5 million Ethiopian children will suffer from malnutrition.

Individuals in Ethiopia are advised to stock up on food and bottled water, and conserve water as much as possible due to ongoing drought conditions. Individuals are also advised to monitor developments to the situation and to avoid any protests or other unrest that may arise as a result of increased tensions during the ongoing period of acute food insecurity (i.e. tensions resulting from competition for limited resources, etc.).
